First class subwoofers not only produce the room rattling bottom end of home theater but also the fine texture and foundation of music. They can do so, not by providing a great deal of boom, but by adding the depth and power and palpable transients of real music. This reduces the load on midbass drivers and produces more transparent midbass and more precise sound source resolution.
There are several obstacles to producing powerful and musical bass in any given room. The first is dynamics. The subwoofers have to be able to pump enough air and remain in control to fully and accurately represent what the music calls for and music can call for a great deal of low frequency room energizing dynamics . Secondly, because of the long wave lengths of low frequency sound, “room modes” create very uneven response in different locations in the room. These nodes vary in severity by frequency and are impossible for even the most advanced room correction systems to fully neutralize. Therefore minimizing the effects of room modes at the listing position is extremely difficult when only one subwoofer is employed.
The only approach which will even out and reduce these nodes is distributed subwoofers. This is the application of multiple subwoofers in different locations in the room as recommended by THX and most custom installers. The multiplicity of room modes from a distributed system means that many of them average out at the listening position and make optimization easier. The result is tight but extended bass.
As far as dynamics and power are concerned, multiple subwoofers will pump far more air than a single subwoofer for more effortless and natural bass.
The Newform Atak subs are passive (ie the built-in amplifier has been removed) 12” designs which utilize a cast aluminum frame driver with a 3” voice coil and a 106 oz (3kg) magnet. In the case of the 10” with passive models, the magnet is 212 oz (6kg).
In both cases, the well finished black cabinets are very small (12” model is a 14” cube and the 10” with passive is 12” x 13”) and very easy to conceal in a room. Subwoofers being black boxes are best seen as invisible in terms of decor. A single subwoofer with similar output capability would have to have two 18” drivers in a very large and very noticeable enclosure.
The subwoofer systems we are offering consist of 4 12” passive subwoofers, an 1100w (bridged Crown amplifier) and a Behringer DCX2496 digital crossover along with a terminal panel and cables.
These systems can be downsized with price reduction options. If your receiver or processor has room correction that works well for low frequencies (not all are designed for this) then you can omit the Behringer digital crossover. If your room cannot possibly accommodate 4 subwoofers then the number can be reduced to 3 or even 2. If you are tolerant of slight cosmetic imperfections then a further saving is available.
This system contains everything and is ideally run off your receiver or pre-pro subwoofer output (or left and right outputs from your preamplifier, CD or DVD player).
Warranty is two years on the subwoofers and the manufacturers warranty on the Behringer and Crown electronics.

How did Newform manage to put togther such a phenomenal deal? We came across a large number of subwoofers from a high end but bankrupt manufacturer which had been recalled due to faulty amplifiers. These retailed for between $1100.00 and $1600.00 each. We have pulled the questionable amps and made the subs passive. Acoustically these subwoofers are A1 with a full 2 year warranty with one way shipping.
